Breezy and Rainy Friday Evening
We will have a similar set up on Friday as we did on Tuesday (Rain and Wind). A strong low pressure system over the great lakes will bring a period of rain Friday evening into the night as a cold front passes through. Expect rain from 6 PM to Midnight.
Saturday will be a blustery day with temperatures in the mid thirties and winds gusting to 30 mph. It will feel like it is in the low 20s throughout the day. Not a fun day to be outside. Cold air will settle into the area for the next week or so.
Having cold air in place leaves our region in good hands for mother nature to bring us snow. As of now I expect a light event or two over the next week as minor upper level shortwaves and jet streaks move over the region. If one of these shortwaves intensifies we could see some accumulating snow worth shoveling. As of now I don't see any major storm in the making for the next week however with cold air in place anything is possible.
It is right on the edge of cold and warm air (baroclinic region) in which storms start to circulate. Then when a upper level disturbance moves over this baroclinic region the circulation increases and the storm strengthens rapidly (often lending to bombogenesis). This requires timing and placement. In years past we have experienced cold spells with little snow simply due to the fact that we are too cold and we too far away from the border between warm and cold air. Hopefully this year we can ride the fine line and with good timing get us a big storm.
