Winter Storm January 6th-7th Outlook

Writer's picture: inglisbriinglisbri

There will be a Winter Storm on Thursday and Friday of this week affecting the majority of the eastern seaboard. The storm will come from the Pacific Northwest and ride across the country following the jet stream*. As the storm crosses the country it will go towards the south and gain energy and moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and approach eastward. Some models then have this energy phasing into a coastal storm off the coast which could then strengthen into a nor easter or a weak clipper/coastal low. The exact path and the intensity of the event is still to be determined. As of now the models show this to be a quick hitting event bringing light to moderate amounts of snow. More details to come tomorrow morning as we inch closer to the event. PS for the snow lovers, since the cold will be in place we are hoping for a track that hugs the coastline bringing heavy bands of snow on land.

* Jet Stream - The bigger the divide in temperatures between the two air masses creates a stronger and more active Jet Stream with troughs of cold air and ridges of warm air. While storms do ride along the jet stream, they also affect the shape of the jet stream. *

Here is the latest run of the GFS. You can see the storm form, move east then strengthen up the coast. The model was ran at 18z or 1 PM Eastern Time.
